Welcome to the wonderful world of Algebraic Geometry, by Robin Hartshorne. One of the gold-standard references in algebraic geometry, the book is famous for its gigantic collection of exercises (more than four hundred, according to the introduction). These exercises span an incredible range of interests, from detailing important constructions (e.g., gluing schemes) to giving key examples of algebro-geometric phenomena. As such, it is desirable to have a common repository of all exercises' solutions. While some people claim to have "solved them all at some point" (and many undoubtedly have), there doesn't seem to be a publicly available complete set of TeXed solutions. The point of this wiki is to remedy this situation.
This wiki is open to all, and the standard wiki decorum is in effect. Given that it's still in its infancy, the general style and structure are currently in flux. This will settle itself naturally over time. However, it is hoped/expected that users follow a few simple guidelines:
Do
- Upload solutions, including alternate solutions to exercises already having solutions. Multiple solutions offer the reader multiple opportunities of achieving key insights and understanding.
- Upload partial solutions to exercises lacking solutions, so long as missing details are clearly indicated.
- Fix typos and mistakes. Errors lead to unneeded confusion. Prevent future misery.
- Upload graphics and figures illustrating key concepts or examples, even if somewhat roughly drawn. The pictures might offer new perspectives on proofs, or lead to new examples.
- Replace rough graphics and figures with more expertly drawn versions, especially if you have the skill and inclination to do so.
- Strive for clarity and precision. If you're having trouble wording a proof, consider uploading your current version as a "partial proof" with a statement indicating its need for clarification.
- Update the status of solutions, given in the chapter summaries, when you make a contribution.
- Type out the statements of the exercises you are proving. (This will change, however, if there are any complaints about copyright issues.)
- Add your name to the list of contributors if you make a contribution (and would like some credit).
Don't
- Upload copyrighted material. Each such occurrence greatly increases the probability of this wiki getting shut down.
- Make significant changes to the structural layout of the wiki. Recommendations and suggestions for such changes/additions can be sent to ude.hatu.htam|notsae#ude.hatu.htam|notsae. (Feel free, however, to create new pages for sections that don't yet exist.)
